Map vs Territory

  • The map is a simple representation of what we think the landscape looks like, but it is by no means the reality. It could've been drawn at a particular point in time, may no longer represent the truth and may have been created imperfectly

  • The idea sets out to remind us that we may create 'maps' in our minds of what we perceive and believe the reality/territory to be, but in fact, the reality is outside of our minds

  • Changing the map we've created doesn't change reality, we must act in the real life - wishful thinking doesn't change the world we have to live in

  • Action: instead of trying to change the map, adapt to the reality of the territory we live in and face the path we can see and have to deal with

  • Understanding that maps may not reflect the territory allows us to understand that we may not have all the information or don't know everything
